Box Brief:
Congrats to Josh Bullock for being the May Member of the Month at Apollo! Scroll down to learn more about Josh.

Josh B

You are one of the most friendly people at Apollo.  I’m pretty sure you know everybody.  What is your motivation to walk up to a stranger and say hello?
I remember the first time I attended Apollo and how intimidated I felt. Fortunately Bryce Childs had introduce me to a few people the first day. Mark, JoLynn, Jason and a few others and I recognize that if it had not been for that experience I probably wouldn’t have come back. I understand how overwhelming it can be and I think it’s upon us as members of the gym to make the newcomers feel welcome and to help them fully experience what an amazing Box Apollo is.

You have the singular distinction of breaking a barbell in a WOD.  Given your 6’ 6” height and adding to that your reach….the bar had long way to fall after each of those presses.  Haha Apollo thanks you btw, since Rogue replaced 9 older barbells with new ones when we sent them that picture.  What were your thoughts when it happened and the comments from those that witnessed it?
I’m glad to do what I can to help out the gym😉 And yes, that bar was basically reaching terminal velocity by the time it hit the ground so it’s not a big surprise that it broke. As soon as I dropped the bar I turned away so I didn’t actually see it break the only thing that I knew is that the bar didn’t bounce which I thought was odd and then people around me were laughing and pointing and that’s when I noticed that it had broken…And of course by doing that I managed to establish dominance over everybody in the gym because clearly I’m the strongest person there.

You’re a pretty active guy.  What are some of your favorite things to do.
I spend the majority of my time trying to figure out what the hell on earth women want… But I’m not making much headway with it… I’ll let all the men know when I have some useful information to pass on.

Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of free time these days. When I do I enjoy mountain biking (shout out to the 🔥Gnar Shredderz🔥 follow them on Instagram) hiking, repelling and just simply being outside.  Mostly I enjoy being with my family.  It doesn’t really matter what we’re doing I just like being around them.

You have been doing CrossFit for years.  What do you like about it?  It can’t be pull ups and squats.  CF is rough on a long range of motion.  Haha
CrossFit discriminates against tall people😉 In all honesty there’s really not much that I don’t like about CrossFit. Above all though, CrossFit to me is so relate-able to life. When we think about things in this life that are truly worth doing… getting an education, raising children, working on your career, your relationships, your physical well-being, it’s a challenge and it supposed to be that way. It’s the only time in life that we’re actually growing. Crossfit has taught me patience, determination, mental fortitude and simply believing in myself. I’ve been able to take those traits and apply them to every aspect of my life and for that I can’t tell you how grateful I am for this program and Apollo.

If you could travel anywhere, where would it be and if you could spend an afternoon with any person who has ever lived who would you pick?
I would love to spend about a month in the cook islands off the coast of New Zealand. it’s not a tourist destination yet but they still have white sand beaches and clear blue water. It sounds absolutely wonderful! As for who I would spend an afternoon with, I’d have to say my mom. To hear her voice again and ask her questions about the what’s on the other side would be very fun and interesting.  But if you want somebody famous….. I think Nikola Tesla would be extremely interesting. I’d probably only understand about 1/1000’s of the things he would talk about but I would still learn a ton.
