Congrats to Dawn Zabroske for being the February Member of the Month at Apollo! Scroll down to learn more about Dawn.

Dawn Z

Congrats Dawn on being the January Member of the Month!!! Tell us how you got started here at Apollo.
Well, I was about a month into CrossFit. I was out here on a job interview & Dylan suggested I come to a class. Everyone was so nice that when I moved I figured I’d check you guys out again. I’d been here a couple weeks when you decided to do that WOD out at the park. That’s when I met you & Rajah & Jes & Jolene & you guys were all so nice – I knew Apollo was my new place:)

How has CrossFit impacted your life?
I don’t think I’ve ever thought about this. For one – I don’t shy away from lifting something heavy at home or worry I’ll hurt my back or shoulder anymore. For two- I sleep like a rock at night. For three – I don’t know where I possibly would’ve made friends in Vegas if it wasn’t for this place!

You’ve seen huge gains lately and look amazing! What’s the key to your success?
You’re much too kind, but thank you!
If I had to pick one thing that contributes the most it would be consistency with a capital C! Consistency with workouts, consistency with fuel & consistency with recovery. I mean you can’t show up a couple of times a week & expect to make huge gains. But if you just come do the WOD day after day – before you know it you’re staring down 20 – 50lbs more on the barbell during lifts, you’re getting your first HSPU (with ab mats), you’re using a lower resistance band on pull ups. I mean you make it pretty easy on us Chad. We don’t have to think about anything. We just show up & follow the programming & challenge ourselves to try something a little heavier or a little harder each week.

What would you say to someone nervous about trying CrossFit?
That’s totally normal. This sport is terrifying…hahaha. I mean it’s hard enough to do, but then it’s got its own language & abbreviations on the white board for everything. Don’t get me started on the scoring. If you can figure out anything on your own for the first 3 months you’re doing better than me. We were all there once & still are some days. When you see us whispering to each other it’s us trying to figure out what in the heck we are doing. But the beauty of Apollo is that you don’t have to. The coaches & other members will all help you! And if you’re worried about the weight or a movement – well don’t be. There is a modification for everything. We all go at our own pace. The body will do anything you train it to do & The only person you’re competing with is yourself. My mom is 68 years old & started CrossFit about 3 months ago. Now I get texts from her asking how much I can Clean & Jerk (how cute is that?) If she can do it– so can you 🙂

You’ve come from sunny beaches (Florida) to the desert. What’s been the biggest adjustment for you? Do you prefer our sand to theirs? 🙂
Hands down the lack of humidity. Especially while running!
Chad – have you ever been to Clearwater Beach? Oh my goodness that is not even a fair question for poor Nevada. Clearwater has some of the most beautiful sand anywhere!

You coordinated the first Apollo “Escape Room” activity. Your team won. Do you attribute that to your Apollo training or your professional managerial skills?
The Escape Room is much like my Apollo Team WODs & my managerial skills. Surround yourself with the right people & they always make you look better. Either that or it was pure luck. I suppose it could go either way 😉

What’s your favorite flavor of Starburst?
Strawberry

If you could have any super power what would it be and what would you do with it?
I’d like to say something fun like the power to grant gymnastics skills or double unders or turning all the ingredients & calories in junk food into healthy foods after you eat it & grant that to all the Moms out there. But honestly it would have to be to cure genetic disorders that affect children across the country. The kids, they get me every time!

Box Brief:
It’s that time of year again. The Open is upon us! That means for 5-weeks we will over analyze our strategies, diets and workout partners. We may lose sleep and sanity while we stay up refreshing the leaderboard. Hoping this is the year you take down Fraser! To go through something this challenging, you need a support group. What better way than throwing down with some friends at Apollo?

Every Thursday, starting February 23rd, CrossFit HQ will announce an individual workout. Each athlete will have until the following Monday at 5pm to complete the workout and turn in their score to Games.CrossFit.com. Your individual score will go towards your teams overall total each week. At the end of the 5-week competition, we will crown our new team Champions! Last year our winners were The Swamp Donkey’s!! Who will take the belt home in 2017?!!

Below are several details about the competition:
Teams of 4

Athletes must be registered for the open to compete

We choose the teams

No one can sign up for a team after February 22nd

We finalize the teams on February 23rd before 5pm

Every week will have fun challenges allowing your team to earn extra points toward their overall score to help give them an edge. These challenges can be anything from doing burpees in the produce section at Smith’s to wearing matching costumes during the workout.

Each team will designate a team captain to track their scores and extra points. The team captain is responsible for ensuring all teammates have completed their workout and extra points have been submitted.

At the end of each week, when all scores are finalized, we will post a new leader board. The team who is ranked the highest after the five weeks, will be awarded our “Apollo Championship Belt”!
