Laurie

Okay, so you’re a DOCTOR! (I think that’s pretty cool). In fact you are an intern right now. I watch Greys Anatomy so I know exactly what you’re going through. Here’s the thing though, I don’t see any of those fools getting to the gym. EVER. How do you manage your crazy schedule and still get to Apollo?
My husband and I decided that when we started residency a little over a year ago, we would have a goal of making it to the gym 7 days a week (knowing completely that we would probably only be able to go 4-5 days per week just because of life). We treat the gym like part of our work day/routine. Honestly, having an accountability partner is HUGE. There are days where I really don’t want to go because I’ve worked 16 hours on a night shift, but ultimately, I feel better after working out. We have to be super intentional about every minute of the day and how we manage our time. But we do it!

You’re married to that hottie Pat who happens to be a fellow intern. When you see each other at the gym you act like you haven’t seen each other in forever. How did you guys meet?
AHH! Pat is the BEST. Seriously, how’d I get so lucky?? The funny thing is, there are weeks where the only time we see each other is for an hour at a time at the gym once or twice a week because we’re on opposite work schedules. That’s why we act like we haven’t seen each other in forever! Because we haven’t! That’s also why I try to sneak over and hold his hand while we’re stretching LOL.

We met in Colorado when both of us moved there for medical school. It was about 2 weeks before the first day and I reached out to my fellow future classmates to see if a group wanted to get together for dinner and to go out downtown so we could get to know each other before school started. Pat messaged me back and said he wanted to join (followed by, “and in case I get lost, can I get your number?”)… smooth… He ended up sitting across the table from me at dinner and we hit it off instantly. We then found out we were both invited by a classmate to the same church service the next day so we went together. The week before school officially started, we had an intro to medicine course we both signed up for. On the first day, Pat came into the classroom and sat next to me. From then on, we were study buddies. A few nights later he texted me and asked if I would go get ice cream with him. I asked him if he was asking me on a date via text and told him to try again, but in person. The next day I knew he was going to ask me out, so after class finished, I started booking it to my car (I wanted to make him work for it!). I could hear his cowboy boots clicking behind me as he picked up the pace haha! As I closed my door, he put his hand up and stopped it and asked me if I would go out on a date with him. We went out and I watched him spill chocolate ice cream all down the front of him. It was at that moment that I knew he was my person.

You’re one of the happiest people I know. Always smiling and happy. Given the demands on your time and the stress of your job how do you manage that?
Dude I have no idea. Honestly. I’d be lying if I said being in residency is easy. Especially when your spouse is also in residency. But having an outlet like working out at Apollo and having an incredible community that’s so supportive makes such a big difference. And I think Pat makes the coffee extra strong in the morning so that helps! 😝 We are really intentional about scheduling trips/vacations periodically throughout the year, so we have something to look forward to, especially when things get crazy. That always keeps me optimistic and the memories from our previous trips always pick me up on a tough day.

Where are you from and what brought you to Vegas and Apollo?
I’m originally from Huntington Beach, CA. I came to Vegas because I got a job at Nellis Air Force Base as a Family Medicine Resident [all you active duty people, come see me in clinic 😊 ]! When we were planning our move, I looked up CrossFit boxes and Apollo was the closest to our new house and the one gym that had a class after 730pm (which often is the only class I can get to after work). So please don’t ever get rid of that class or else I may never be able to work out again haha!

What is the greatest life lesson you have learned so far?
A lion doesn’t worry himself over the opinions of sheep. It’s so easy to worry about what other people think about you or the way you live your life and that can eat you alive. As soon as you stop caring about all that nonsense and live your life to the fullest, doing what brings you joy and sustains your spirit, that’s when you’re truly living. Keeping this in mind helps me stress less and enjoy life more!

What kind of food best describes your personality?
Macaroni and cheese! Because I LOVE cheese! My personality is definitely a mixture of light-hearted and fun, but I can also be professional and serious when needed. Just like mac and cheese! You can have Kraft for kids or fancy mac and cheese for adults. And often, I can be a touch spicy when I’m tired or frustrated, similar to pepper jack mac and cheese!
